Chapter Twelve

The shadow of his captain caused Garen to look up from his paperwork, and the look on his face told Garen all he needed to know. “Another one?”

“Yep.” Thomas tossed the paperwork onto Garen’s desk. “Exactly one month since the last, in exactly the same way…except one.”

“More of the house burned down?” Garen cocked an eyebrow at Thomas, who nodded.

“First victim, just the body burned. The second one, body and bed. This time, the entire room…just like Luke predicted. People said they felt the heat and smelled smoke much farther out than should have been possible.” Thomas rubbed his face, and Garen noticed just how tired his captain looked. He and Luke weren’t the only ones burning the midnight oil to solve the murders.

“It was more powerful this time. Luke warned it would be.” Garen shook his head.

“I’ve got everyone I can spare working on this.” Thomas clenched his hands into fists. “I hate to imagine what the outcome might be if we don’t stop it.”

“Me too.” Garen closed his eyes. A fire demon loosed to walk the Earth? Garen could imagine the devastation—uncontrollable fires sweeping across continents. And that would only be the start.

“As soon as we finish running correlations with the last two, you’ll get the information. Then you and Luke must stop it.” Thomas’ jaw was clenched so hard that the muscles twitched.

“Yes, sir. We’ll find a way.” Always better, and easier, to stop a demon getting free than try to re-contain one once it breaks loose. Even the easier option is difficult and dangerous.

The email Garen was waiting for came through far faster than he’d expected, and Garen stared at the single name on the screen for a full minute before calling his husband and asking Luke to be present at the formal questioning of their main suspect.
